Daemons Domain – All Souls Trilogy & Universe Fan Site + Podcast: Daemons Discuss – Podcast: Take 30! | Gallowglass (and Other Things!) – Covers parts of Shadow of Night and The Book of Life
Description: Gallowglass. That’s what we’re talking about here! Daemons and Discussers alike have all of the feels! Both good and bad! We also discuss our own reception of the Book of Life back in 2014.
SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read The All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life. If you haven’t, and you don’t mind, we certainly don’t mind! 😊 Let’s do this. *Note – this podcast is labeled ‘explicit’

☞ These show notes aren’t quite as detailed as we’d like, because this episode was plagued with a ghost! The file of this episode was finalized on the same day it was uploaded — the ghost was being a world-class jerk! We didn’t have a lot of time to time-stamp everything — bygones!

The Earl of Pembroke/The Endeavour |
* (01:53) Gallowglass: the history
- His name: Gallowglass is not a person per se, it’s a job.
- Dowry and Gallowglass: ‘The first 160 Gallowglass, who appear to have been from Clan MacDoughall arrived in Ireland in 1259AD as part of Dougall MacSorley’s (King of the Hebrides) daughters dowry in her marriage to Aedh O’Connor, the then King of Connaught.‘ Read more –> here
- Gallowglass fought for Edward Bruce
- We talk about the name “Sorley” – a derivative of the name MacSorley (King of the Hebrides); we also make connections to the runes Gallowglass depends on.
- How did Hugh die, and why won’t Gallowglass go back to France? The fall of the Templars is why. ‘At dawn on Friday, October 13, 1307, scores of French Templars were simultaneously arrested by agents of King Philip, later to be tortured in locations such as the tower at Chinon, into admitting heresy and other sacrilegious offenses in the Order. Then they were put to death.’
- He’s not a Berserker, he’s an Úlfhéðnar — his own brand of wild and berserk!
- Gallowglass as a sailor! One of his boats: The Earl of Pembroke/Endeavour.
- What sent us on our Merman tangent: From The Book of Life: Gallowglass put the phone in his pocket and stared out to sea. He’d been shipwrecked once on this stretch of Australia’s coast. He was fond of the sites where he’d been washed ashore, a merman coming aground in a tempest to find he could live on solid ground after all.
- We connect Macbeth to him in small ways.

* (11:33) Gallowglass in Shadow of Night
- We discuss our first impressions of Gallowglass. Jean, Angela & Valerie saw him as a cool person in the book (nothing really romantic – very avuncular)
- We love how he calls it like he sees it!
- Gallowglass was very necessary to this book.
- He was an excellent squire to Diana.
- He kept the marriage in line!
- We loved it when Gallowglass and Stephen got together!
- He loved to tell backstories about Matthew (tended to ignore the “not my tale to tell” rule!)

Lesson: Don’t let Valerie play with Photoshop after she’s read the chapter with Corra and Gallowglass 😝 |
* (19:19) Gallowglass in The Book of Life
- We preface this section by warning you about our attitudes about this book.
- Deb has said that could’ve written 1200 pages when it came to The Book of Life
- We discuss our first impressions of Gallowglass in this book (Breakfast with Fernando, dealing with Corra, helping with a distressed Diana).
- We rushed through our first reads of The Book of Life.
- Angela’s heart broke when Gallowglass showed himself to Stephen to let him know that Diana would be watched over
- Hugh was his maker, Fernando was his mate – the three of them formed a scion.
- We discuss THAT. You know, THAT.
- We talk about the tropes … (The Bodyguard/Lancelot)
- If we were to re-write the story we would have Gallowglass confess to Fernando or Baldwin his feelings. We would not have had Diana in “the know.” Alas, it’s not our tale to tell!
- Angela brings up fandom murmerings; her declaration: “He’s not going to be getting with Corra, and NOT going to be getting with Rebecca!” The shippers have gone wild!
- The Lily mystery.
* (43:28) Gallowglass smells of sea-salt and peppermint! There are scents you can buy . . . we bring up the Gallowglass scent from Bohemienne Life, and the Jo Malone scent that Deb said smelled like Gallowglass! Wood Sage and Sea Salt is available in most establishments that carry higher end scents.
* (44:33) Fan reception! Thank you: Shelli, Rute, Wendy, Valerie, Melissa & NE Angela!
* (53:27) Save It For the Show …Topic: Fan art and copyright! Jean (our resident Daemon lawyer who keeps us out of trouble regularly) gives an overview, and offers some tips to creative fans out there. We talk about Kyme’s scents. We also talk about this shoe picture (because there were some misguided accusations! 😡).
